Malev Hungarian Airlines

Malev Hungarian Airlines

Having celebrated the diamond jubilee of its foundation on 29 March 2006, Malév Hungarian Airlines, the national carrier of the Republic of Hungary, is proud to look back on 60 years of dedicated service and distinguished tradition. Today, Malév - operating scheduled passenger, cargo and charter services - is recognized as one of the leading airlines in Central-Eastern Europe.
It was less than a year after Louis Blériot's demonstration flight in Hungary when the first Hungarian aviation company - the Aero Joint Stock Company - was formed, on June 25, 1910. The company (operating until 1912) established a school for pilots, where the crew and technical staff were taken on contract from France.
Between 1996 and 2006, numerous key milestones were reached: the fleet was upgraded, many new services were inaugurated, and a new route network was born. Malév also took over a new catering centre.

The appearance of low-cost airlines in Hungary represented a new situation and challenge for the national carrier. However, despite increasingly intense competition, Malév has been able to maintain its position on the market.

Starting in 1996, Malév expanded its fleet with six new 67-seater Fokker 70s and, from 2002, with four 50- and 48-seater Bombardier CRJ 200 aircraft designed to meet the demands of business travellers. Parallel with this the company began a rolling programme of aircraft exchange. In 1998, Malév bade a fond farewell to its Tu-134s, which had been in service for over 30 years, and in 2001 to its last Tu-154 aircraft.

From January 2003, a major programme was launched to replace the company’s older Boeings with the very latest Next-Generation Boeing 737-600s, 700s and 180-seat 800 aircraft. Malév’s first brand-new Boeing 737NG touched down on the tarmac at Ferihegy on 30 January 2003, and the last in the programme, the 18th, arrived in April 2005. Today, Malév operates one of Europe’s most youthful fleets.

The official Malév website appeared on the Internet in 1997. The site is constantly being developed to meet the latest demands of users; online ticketing was introduced on 22 December 2003. This service quickly became extremely popular with the travelling public. From 2005, the airline has continuously extended the availability of e-Tickets. The replacement of printed air tickets with e-Tickets makes it far easier to buy an airfare and the amount of ticket-related administration is reduced, too.

Over the past few years Malév has maintained its market position despite the many difficulties afflicting the entire air transport industry and amidst increasingly intense competition. It has also increased its passenger numbers year after year. The company carried 3,000,000 scheduled customers in 2006. Malév has also been presented with numerous awards both at home and abroad, and is recognized as a leading European carrier for the standard of its services, its punctuality and customer care.

TOWARDS oneworld

In November 2005, Malév was invited to join oneworld. The Hungarian airline becomes a full-right member of the aviation alliance on 1st April 2007.
The oneworld alliance allows its members to offer customers a far wider range of services and greater benefits than any airline could on its own.
This translates into an extended route network as well as the chance to earn and burn frequent flyer points/miles across a coordinated route network, plus admission to even more airport lounges.
The accession of Malév to oneworld gives the airline’s customers access to around 700 destinations in 150 countries flying on the over 2000 aircraft in the oneworld alliance using a single air ticket and with excellent, coordinated connections.
